Description

In this lesson the students will be introduced to the common adjectives to describe physical appearance of the people and will practice using the adjectives. The lesson will start with some visuals to give the idea for adjectives, then students will do drilling to ensure that they gain confidence to speak. In this part of the lesson there will be clarification of MFPA (adjectives). After presentation they will be provided practice in short dialogues. (A: “What does s/he look like?” B: “He’s short, thin man. He has black hair. He has glasses etc. “. During the practice phase they will also have a model listening for describing people. (course book track 1.44) In the production phase they will be asked to start a dialogue with their partners (pw) to describe the people in the picture. Those pictures will be celebrity couples. (e.g. David/Victoria Beckham) A will describe the male, B will describe the female. FB will be given after the activity. (Error Correction) If time there will be hw check from the previous lesson.

Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of physical appearance.
  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about describing words in the context of physical appearance

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Instructions : I'm going to show you 2 pictures and I want you to describe the people on these pictures using adjectives like - Tall, Beautiful, Short (2 minutes) * Display 2 photo's on the WB - one of . Ss are to describe the people in the picture to me. (1min) * Using the words they give me I will say these are adjectives and I will write this word on the board with a few examples (tall, young & beautiful). (2mins) Explain adjectives are used to describe things/people/places. (1min)

Pre-Teaching Adjectives (4-5 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice TL

Instruction :You are going to do some example sentences with adjectives. I've done the first one for you. Write fill in the gap sentences on the WB in the context of describing people - He is a young man She has dark hair They have blue eyes She has a red dress * Make sure Ss understand 'opposites' by writing some adjectives on the board and Ss to tell me the opposite (eg tall/short, old/young) Ss come out to WB to write answers.

Pre-Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Instructions : You wiil now do an activity on your own. Write down the adjectives for the pictures. I'll do the first one with you. * Show HO 1 - match the adjectives in the box to the pictures in pairs * Give Ss the hand-out Instructions : You have 3 mins. Peer-check at the end of the activity.

While-Listening #1 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Instructions: You will now listen to a recording. Listen to the words and make sentences with She is or She has. If you hear the word glasses. What will be the sentence? She is or She has? She has glasses. If you hear the word tall. What will be the sentence? She is or She has? She is tall. ICQ: What you going to do? Listen and write. * Ss listen to the recording and check their answers * get FB on their answers * Make sure Ss understand 'opposites' by writing some adjectives on the board and Ss to tell me the opposite (eg tall/short, old/young)

Controlled practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check

Instructions : You will discuss with your partners and write the adjectives in their correct group. *Show Ss the worksheet* You have 4mins When you have finished please check the answers with the answer keys which I have pasted around the room. * Show HO 2 - match the adjectives to the correct category. Pairwork. * Ss check answers on the answer keys around the room

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

While Ss check answers for previous activity. Write on WB : - * write 'He's a handsome man' on the WB, ask the form from Ss - subject + adjective + noun * Ask Ss where adjectives go - before a noun. Example sentences: She's a beautiful woman. He's a short man. She has red lips. He has dark hair. Introduce collocation - handsome man; beautiful woman; pretty girl attractive or good-looking can be used to describe any person. * Ask Ss where do adjectives go? (before the noun) * Drill the sentence * write 'They are youngs children' on the WB - ask Ss what is wrong (the s on the end of young). Explain adjectives don't have a plural form * Drill the correct sentence

Controlled practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide Ss an opportunity to practice the target language

* Split Ss into 2 or 4 groups (depending on numbers). Show HO3 - famous people. Instruct each group to work together to write a name for each category * FB - elicit some examples * In the same groups one person from one group says a name eg Brad Pitt, the other group say the category - Is he a handsome film star?' the first group replies yes he is. * change group roles
