Procedure (66-90 minutes)
Share the picture on page 17 and ask the SS to discuss the questions in pairs. Get a whole class feedback.
Tell students to answer the questions individually in Exercise 2 A on p 18. Then conduct a whole class feedback.
Give SS a minute to skim the text “Yes, man changed my life.” Have them answer the questions in ex 2 B p 18 and pair-check their answers before getting a whole class feedback.
Ask Ss to read “Day 1 and Day 2” on p 19 and answer the questions on their own in ex 2 C p 18. Have Ss compare their answers in pairs before providing a whole class feedback.
Tell SS to discuss the questions in ex 1 D p 18. During feedback, elicit key phrases such as “stand up on skis” and “fall over”. Conduct a whole class feedback.
Instruct students to listen to the audio recording twice in ex 2 E p 18 and identify whether the statements are true or false. Tell them to write the correct variant for any false statements. Elicit answers from the class and have SS to provide the correct versions of the false statements.
Tell SS to answer the question in ex 1 F, p 18 by sharing their own experience. Provide a whole class feedback.
Pre-teach key vocabulary such as “mosquito” and “bite” by writing them on the board and check understanding by using elicitation. Tell SS to look at ex 2 C, p 18 in pairs and discuss their answers.
Play the audio recording once and instruct SS to check their answers to ex 3 A, p 18. Play the recording a second time and ask SS to answer the question in ex 3 B. Get a whole class feedback.
Have SS answer the questions individually in ex 3 C, p 18 and share their opinions. Conduct a whole class feedback.
Write several example sentences on the board with missing past simple verbs such as “I … to the grocery store yesterday” Including both regular and irregular verbs. Elicit the missing verbs from SS. Explain the past simple tense by highlighting its meaning, form, and pronunciation of -ed endings. Emphasize the difference between regular and irregular verbs. Ask CCQs like “Do we add -ed to all verbs? Is the action finished?” Have each student say two sentences using both regular and irregular past simple verbs.
Instruct SS to complete ex 2 A, p 18 individually. Then, elicit the answers from different SS for ex 2 B, p 18. If a student struggles, encourage peers to help provide the correct answer. Have them complete ex 4 A by filling in the sentences with the correct verbs. Elicit answers from the class for ex 4 B, p 19. Conduct a while class feedback.
Play the recording in ex 5 A, p 19 and tell SS to check their answers in pairs. In ex 5 B, p 19 elicit answers from the class. Then, play the recording for ex 5 C, p 19 and have SS pair-check their answers before conducting whole class feedback.
Distribute handouts to SS. Have SS to work in pairs and talk about the various topics, using the past simple tense. Monitor them and get a whole class feedback.
Ask students reflective questions, including grammar such as: “What grammar rule did we learn today?” and “What was the hardest part of the lesson?” Put some good use of language and some sentences with mistakes made during the free speaking practice stage. Elicit corrections.
