In this lesson,students learn about modals of obligation (must / mustnt ,should / shouldnt ,have to / dont have to )through guided discovery based on a reading text about MILLIONAIRS . After the structures are introduced , there is some controlled practice through matching sentence and sentence compeletion.


Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of modal verbs of obligation in the context of MILLIONAIRES.

Subsidiary Aims

  • SPEAKING - To practice freer speaking on the topic of millionaires and controlled speaking practice of TL related to jobs.


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Student will be asked some interesting questions about being a millionaire. After eliciting answer ,students will be asked to work in pair and talk about what millionairs do and what they do not do.

Grammar-Modals of obligation(meaning) (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning

-Ss are given handout (Ex5 p45) and try to understand what they mean by matching them to basic explanation.This called a guided discovery approach to teaching grammar . -The answers will be checked by asking pairs. - Ss will scan the text of MILLIONAIRES and they will find and underline the sentences 1-6 of this practice .

Grammar-Modals of obligation(form) (5-10 minutes) • to clarify the form of the target language

-T will write two wrong sentences on the board highlighting modal verb. -Ss will be asked about these examples to correct them.For example, Ahmet have to leave class early - Ahmet musts show his passport at the airport. -Ss are asked to identify subject of the sentence , model verb in the sentence and the type of word follows the model verb.

Grammar-Controlled Practice (7-10 minutes) • Basic scaffolding in order to create the sentence

-Ss are given another handout based on Ex 6A p45. -Ss will create a new sentece with using modals of obligations. -T will monitor the groups and give feedback when necessary . -They will check answers in pairs. Then, the answers will be checked as a class.

Grammar-Free practice of TL (5-10 minutes) • to provide the ss with free practice of the target language

-Instruction is based on Ex 6B p45 and lead in activity. -T will ask students to draw a table with 3 colums for three jobs with two heading :important and unimportant qualities -Ss will be asked to write sentences for each heading they have to use the target language. -ICQ will be checked. -Ss will be monitored and given instant correction when needed.
