Description

This 45-minute online lesson is designed for pre-intermediate students and focuses on developing their understanding and use of the present perfect continuous tense, specifically with the time expressions how long, since, and for. The lesson is structured around a short text and follows a clear progression from receptive skills to productive language use, combining comprehension, form focus, and speaking fluency. Throughout the lesson,I will provide support through visual aids, guided questions, and breakout room monitoring, ensuring that students are both challenged and encouraged to use the language with increasing independence.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To enable students to understand and use the present perfect continuous tense with "how long," "since," and "for" in the context of describing ongoing actions or habits that started in the past and continue to the present.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop students’ ability to read a short text for overall understanding (gist) and for specific information (intensive reading).
  • To raise awareness of the meaning, form, and use of the present perfect continuous, particularly how it combines with how long, since, and for to express duration.
  • To give students the opportunity to personalize the target language through a freer speaking activity, increasing their fluency and confidence in real-life communication.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will be exposed to pictures and thie next questions: ➤ What jobs do you think these people would like to do? ➤ What do you think they enjoy doing? Do a brainstorm and try to start creating ideas of hobbies, activities and jobs.

Exposure- Text Work (10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a gist and intensive reading task

1. Gist task: Students will read (3min) the three short paragrpahs of the people that was introduce in the lead-in. Then they will do a quick match acticity. They will match the names to the jobs or activity they love to do. 2. Intensive read activity: Students will work in peers and answer the next questions: How long has Sandra been looking after children? What did Marc start doing when he was eleven? Why did Sanjiv leave his job? And how long has he been unemployed? Who uses since? Who uses for? When do you think you use each one? They will work in BORS and try to write full sentences to start activating the PPC and the use of since and for. (inductibly) Feedback will be together.

Clarification (10-13 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

CCQS wto intrduce meaning and form based on the reading. -Students will identidy the tense and time that is hapenning and also when to use Since and For as new elemtents with PPC. students will create an example of question using How long using the tense. (to check if they understood) They will ask tto other student and they will respond with the correct tense and since/for.

Controlled Practice (5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will answer a google form (4 filling in the gap exercise) They need to rewrite the sentence using the present perfecr continous and select if theyr need for or since.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In pairs (breakout rooms), ask each other: How long have you been studying English? How long have you been living in your current house/city? How long have you been using your phone today? How long have you been working in your job? ➡ Each student shares 1 interesting fact about their partner after returning to the main room.

Error correction (5 minutes) • Correct delayed error

Provide delayed correction after the speaking practice.
