Description

In this lesson, students learn about asking for and giving advice based on a context of recruitment. The lesson starts with an example which teacher will give and ask students if they can tell her what she should do. Later, there will be some clarifications related to grammar. Then there will controlled practice, semi-controlled, and freer controlled practice including speaking activity.

Procedure

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form, and pronunciation of the target language

T will write 'You should think about your future career' on the board, and ask sts to tell where they heard this before. After getting answers from the sts, she will say let's find more sentences from the listening part. T will show HOs to the sts and tell them to reorder the words to make questions and sentences. Sts will have 3 minutes. They will work in pairs. ICQs; Are you going to work individually? (No) Are you going to order the words to make sentences? (Yes) How many minutes do you have? (3 min) After the activity, t will project the answers. She will clarify the form analysis (see Language Analysis) by asking CCQs: T will point the sentences and ask CCQs. After should/shouldn't, what do we use? (infinitive) After would, what do we use? (infinitive) After why don't you, what do we use? (infinitive) After how about, what do we use? (verb + ing) Later, sts will be asked to separate them into two as giving and asking for advice. Also, t will ask which ones are stronger advice and weaker advice. Finally, t will put the stresses on the sentences on the board. After her, the sts will repeat them (for more information please see Language Analysis).

Controlled Practice (7-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Sts will have HOs; and t will give instructions: T: Rearrange the words to make sentences This time, write the sentence under it (the sentence with mixed words) You will work in pairs and have 3 minutes ICQs: Are we going to write the sentences on the same paper (with mixed words)? (Yes) (Teacher will point the paper) Are we going to work in pairs? (Yes) How many minutes do we have? (3) Get WC FB If there are some incorrect answers then ask sts who give correct answers to tell why.

Semi-Controlled Practice (7-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Sts will have HOs after t give the instructions. T: You will work in pairs. One student will be A and the second one will be B. A and B have some problems at work. So, they talk with each other and give some advice to each other. You can see 4 problems in the HOs (T will use point while she speaks) Student A has the first 2 problems. Student B has the second 2 problems. T will give a demo. ICQs: Are you going to work in pairs? (Yes) How many problems do student A have? (2) How many problems do student B have? (2) Which student is going to start to talk first? (Student A) Which student is going to start to give advice? (Student B) Get WC FB

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Sts will be interviewed by other sts. T: I have good news for you, especially those who are students. You will see what kind of questions will be asked during the interview, and that can be really helpful for your future decisions. You will work in pairs. There are sts A and sts B. First, sts A will ask 3 questions to students B, and sts B will answer Later, sts B will ask 3 questions to sts A, and sts A will answer. I will give you some questions. If you want you can ask those questions. However, you can ask different questions as well. You have 5 minutes. ICQs: How many questions do you ask? (3) How many minutes do you have? (5) Are you going to work with a group? (No) Get WC FB Ask them if they want to hire the person they interviewed.
