Materials

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to evaluate various statements and texts to confidently distinguish between facts and opinions, supporting their judgments with clear explanations to strengthen their critical thinking skills.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to evaluate texts to identify biased information by distinguishing between factual statements and personal opinions, and justify how these elements influence the credibility of the message.

Procedure

Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher writes the question on the board: Is technology making service better or worse in clinics and hospitals? She divides the class into two groups — one supporting "Tech is helpful" and the other "Personal contact is better" and asks each student to give one reason supporting their group’s position.

Pre-Reading/Listening (12-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher shares a link with the students and asks them to solve the activity in pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The teacher shares a worksheet with the students and asks them to solve it individually

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The teacher asks the students to gather in pairs and compare their responses.
