W6 Listening June 19 - Thursday
A1-B1 Vets Gen2 level
Materials
Main Aims
-
Improve listening comprehension through exposure to natural, unscripted English
Subsidiary Aims
-
Identify and record real-life expressions and informal vocabulary
Procedure (48-60 minutes)
Procedure: Ask: What phrases do people use when they feel uncomfortable or surprised? How do you say something politely when you're confused or embarrassed? Elicit informal phrases: I had no idea It totally threw me off That was so awkward I didn’t know what to say
Procedure: Give students a list of general situations: Getting someone’s name wrong Being late to a meeting Meeting someone who looks different than expected Ask them to predict: What might people say in that moment? Any emotional reactions? (e.g., Oh no, Are you serious?, Sorry about that) They write 3 phrases they expect to hear in a casual conversation.
Task: Students listen once without writing. Afterward, answer: Who is speaking? What happened? How did they react? Quick pair share to confirm gist.
Procedure: Listen again. Students take notes in Cornell format: Left column: expressions and phrases they hear (e.g., I froze, That was unexpected) Right column: what was happening in the story when that phrase was used Bottom: their favorite 2 phrases and what they think they mean
Procedure: Give students a handout or board activity with expressions from the video. In pairs: Match expressions with meaning or situation Rephrase 3 of them in simpler English Write a sentence using one of the new expressions Examples: I froze = I didn’t know what to do It caught me off guard = It surprised me
Procedure: Each student writes: One phrase they liked What it means When they would use it Quick share with the group. Instructor boards a few favorites to recycle next class.
