Tue. Jun 24th - R&W: Critical thinking (controlled practice)

Materials

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to analyze statements to determine whether they are facts or opinions, and justify their reasoning to reinforce critical thinking skills in evaluating information.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to analyze written or spoken texts to identify biased information by distinguishing between facts and opinions, enhancing their ability to critically evaluate sources.

Procedure

Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher forms teams of five and asks them to complete the activity (Wordwall). The first team to get all the answers correct wins a candy.

Pre-Reading (15-20 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1. The teacher selects one member from each team to compete by facing each other and places a teddy bear between them. She reads a statement aloud (Wordwall), and the first to grab the teddy and correctly classify the statement as a fact or an opinion earns a point for their team. 2. The teacher presents students the concept of "biased information" (last slide)

While-Reading (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The teacher then shares a final link where the students have to read a passage and answer critical thinking questions.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The teacher reviews and provides feedback to the group on the independent practice.
