Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide reading practice using three texts about cities. Students will exercise gist and scan reading sub skills and analyze new vocabulary in the texts.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To clarify vocabulary found in the texts and provide speaking practice in the context of tourism

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T displays world map on WB with "Kingston" written in 3 places. Ss will discuss in pairs to predict what the lesson is about.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To pre-teach vocabulary contained in the texts

T displays pictures of a sea, lake and river on the WB. Ss will get one minute to work in pairs and name them. T will monitor and write what they know on the WB. Ss will match the right picture with the names. T will CCQ to ensure they understand the difference. Does the water move alot in a lake? [No] Does sea water have salt? [Yes] Does the water move in a river? [Yes] Does river water have salt? [No] Where do people go for holidays usually? [The sea/sea-side/beach] Which one has land all around it? [Lake] Which one has land on 2 sides? [River]

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

T distributes Reading HO and asks Ss to find out which country each city is in. Ss will have 30 seconds to complete task. ICQs: Will you read everything? [No] How much time do you have? [one minute] What will you look for? [which country the places belong to] WCF Ss direct T to put the 3 pictures on the right place on the map. Ss will be grouped in teams of three or four. Ss will have 3 minutes to scan texts and complete first task in HO 2. WCF ICQs: How many minutes do you have? [3 minutes] Can you read everything in 3 minutes? [No] What will you answer? [Point to Qs on the top of HO 2]

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Ss will attempt the second exercise in HO 2 in pairs. T will model example of the task first on the WB. Ss will have 4 minutes and will not refer to the texts during the exercise. T monitors Ss during tasks and provides feedback on MPF on new language with gestures, illustrations and comparisons on WB. Ss read text again to verify answers. ICQs: How many sentences are there in each box? [Three] How many belong to another box? [One] Will you look at the texts when you do this? [No] How much time do you have? [4 minutes]

Post-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide Ss with speaking practice using the vocabulary they were exposed to in reading practice stage

T distributes "Free ticket to Kingston" and asks Ss to write down which Kingston they would like to go to on it. Ss are re-grouped so that each pair is made of two Ss with different choices. Ss discuss why they would like to go to the chosen city.
