Description

This session is about a receptive skill. In this lesson, the students will listen to a dialogue between a guest and a hotel receptionist then practice sub-skills like gist and detailed specific information within some tasks. The lesson will end with a group discussion relevant to the context.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed and gist listening practice using a text about problems at hotels in the context of a radio program in which a guest and a receptionist are having a short conversation

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice sub-skills through the context and prepare speaking opportunity to improve fluency in the context of hotels

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1) The picture is on the board," where is it? Is it a big hotel or a small family hotel? Would you like to stay at this hotel?" or what do you think about this picture?" 2) The students' attention is drawn to the topic by the picture. It is given to all the students. 3) The students are put in pairs. 3) ( The teacher shows picture 2 asks Ss what they feel about it. T ," Do you like to stay at this hotel with too small rooms? This is the worst hotel I have ever seen." Ss will probably start naming some problems.) Just in case . Exe 1 pg.50 4) T says and write on WB.," In pairs talk about problems that might you find in bad hotels. write at least 5 problems." On the board underline problem and write an exmple : like too small rooms. 5) ICQs: Are you going to talk about bad hotels? Yes. How many problems are you going to write? 5. 6) The pairs work in groups of four to share their ideas. 7) WC feedback and some ideas are on the board.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1) T shows the exercise on the handout and says," 30 seconds and do this exercise." then HO should be handed around. ICQs: Are you going to work alone or with your partner? alone. 2) To get feedback, there is a task ( filling gaps) that the students have to answer.. 3) On the board : vocabulary , stress, uncountable or countable, plurals... 4) Ss repeat the words. 5) On the board: a. the name of the programme? b. the name of the hotel? c. the names of the two people?d. the jobs of the two people? e. why they went to the hotel? 6) T says," You are going to listen to the audio try to find these questions' answers. 7) T gives students 30 seconds to read the questions and plays the audio. 8) The students share answers in pairs. 9) WC feedback, answers are on the board. a. The holiday programme b. The king Edward Hotel c. Nicki and Gavin d. Reporters e. to vote the hotel

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Exe 2 pg 50. 1) T writes on the board, " First listen to the audio_ tick any of these problems you heard." T has HO (gesture) and says " Remember that the audio will be played once" 2) ICQs: First are you going to listen to the audio or tick the items? Listen. Are you going to think about the items alone? Yes. 3) T plays CD. 4) Ss answer the exercise alone. 5) Ss are in pairs and share their answers. 6) WC feedback. answers are on the board. 1 ,2, 6

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Exe 3 pg.50. 1) T has HO in hands and says, " each card shows an event happened in the hotel. I'd like you to put them in order" 2)T puts Ss in pairs. 3) T plays the CD again. 4) HO is handed around between pairs. 5) The answers will be given on paper. 6) WCFB. 7) If there is any time, the students have to write in front of each even the words people said. 8) T says," When they arrived at the hotel, what did they say? " and Ss reply, " We would like a double room for two people." 9) T says," You are going to write the words the people said in front each event." 10) ICQs: Are you going to work alone?No. Are you going to write things people said? Yes. How much time? 2 min. ( it might change) 11) T plays the CD and the students can check their answers. 12) WCFB.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Exe 4 pg.50 1) T gives each person a small piece of colored paper and says," I'd like you to write any thing that you remember about the conversation you heard." "I will give you about 2 min" 2) ICQs: Are you going to write alone or in pairs? Alone. How much time? 2 minutes. 3) T says," Now move around and find your group mates with the same color." 4) Ss are in their groups. 5) On the board, ' Share your notes and talk to each other. 6) ICQs: Are you going to talk in pairs or groups? groups Are you going to speak English? Yes. 7) WC feedback. Ss might talk about their own experience
