Materials

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to create a dialogue in a veterinary context in which they refuse an invitation and respond to a refusal using polite and natural expressions, showing awareness of tone and social appropriateness.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to create a dialogue in a veterinary context in which they use “kind of” to soften a refusal, demonstrating polite and tactful communication.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher shares an online activity and asks the students to complete it in pairs.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

The teacher shares a dialogue and elicits students to analyze it and identify the characteristics of a good dialogue.

Task (25-30 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

The teacher gives the students a piece of paper and asks them to create a dialogue in which they make, refuse, and respond to a refusal in a veterinary context. She emphasizes that they must also include two other functions covered in previous classes.

Language Analysis (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

The teacher provides feedback on their dialogue and asks them to create a final version and submit it as a PDF.
