Main Aims

To enable students to use and understand vocabulary related to dreams and ambitions, including collocations and pronunciation, in order to discuss their past and present ambitions in a meaningful conversation.
Subsidiary Aims

To clarify and practice common collocations such as “get married,” “have an interesting job,” “become famous,” etc.

To help students recognize and produce appropriate stress patterns in key collocations.

To practice understanding the general idea of a conversation about ambitions.

To give students confidence and scaffolding to talk about personal ambitions using sentence starters and guided prompts.
Procedure (32-43 minutes)
T will show three images to the students of people with a bubble dream with a picture inside Someone who wanted to be: An astronaut/ someone traveling, and someone who wanted to get married The slide will show the question of multiple options: -What do you think the person wanted to be when they were children? (If students do not respond directly, ask them to write their answer on the chat) Pre-teach about a some of the dreams and ambitions and clarify the difference between a dream and an ambition: Do you think that wanting to get married is a dream or an ambition? Do you think that wanting to become millionaire is a dream or an ambition?
Introduce the students through the vocabulary by a conversation among two people talking about what their ambitions and dreams were when they were children compared to their actual thoughts. Students will read for gist for 1-2 minutes and answer a question from the G-form, selecting what the two people are talking about: Answer: B) Their dreams and ambitions and how these have changed over time Solution: If students cannot edit the slide, they can answer through the chat of zoom.
T will ask the students to categorize in three types of some ambitions on their own perspective: -Things that most people do: -Things that very few people do -Things you think are easy/difficult to do Vocabulary used: Get married Have an interesting job Become famous Go around the world Have children Write a novel Become a millionaire Buy a car For this, the students will move the words in the G-slide individually, accommodating them according to their own criteria. Instructions: Drag and put the ambitions in the category you consider appropriate This will take: 3-4 minutes to do, then the Teacher will check the answers with students to provide some feedback and CCQs to clarify Form T will show students an activity where they will have to complete the collocations by using the correct verb. Instructions: Complete the phrases with the correct verbs T will show them on screen and ask the students to individually start completing the activity, giving them a small demo by completing the first one along with the students. This will take: 3-4 minutes to do, then the Teacher will check the answers with students to provide some feedback and CCQs to clarify Pronunciation For this part the students will match the pre-teach collocations in the correct stress pattern, according to how they hear it. Instructions: Stress pattern: Get → O Married → Oo Have → O An → o Interesting → Ooo (can vary: sometimes Oo if reduced) Job → O Become → oO Famous → Oo Go → O Around → oO The → o World → O Have → O Children → Oo Write → O A → o Novel → Oo Become → oO A → o Millionaire → Ooo Buy → O A → o Car → O T will show them on screen and ask the students to individually start completing the activity, giving them a small demo by showing the students they can either move the boxes or write the ambitions underneath This will take: 3-4 minutes to do, then the Teacher will check the answers with students to provide some feedback and CCQs to clarify
Teacher will present to the students some sentences where the collocations pre-teach must be accommodated correctly, for this they will choose the appropriate verb that can be used equally to create more collocations. Instructions: Choose a verb that belongs to all the words in each group Answers: 1.buy 2.become 3.go 4.write 5.have After this the Teacher will guide open class feedback, showing what the students responded in the G-forms document, providing OCFB.
Teacher will present a question for the students: What were your ambitions when you were younger? Would you still like to do these things now? Were your ambitions realistic? The students will make a small conversation revolving about their ambitions using this same questions. Instructions: You will ask this questions to your partner to know about their ambitions. T will provide them with other different ambitions and sentence starters that could help the students due to their pre-intermediate level. Extra ambitions: Buy a house Go to university Learn to drive Become a doctor/ firefighter/ a police officer Appear on Tv Start your own business Sentence starters: I have always wanted…… When i was young, my biggest dream was……. I don’t want to be/do that anymore because…. I would love to do that because……. They were not very realistic because…. I actually managed to…… T will let the students to have a minute to take notes, clarifying only the use of keywords to respond these questions. Students will be in 1 room from zoom in pairs, they will talk for around 3-4 minutes asking this questions taking turns. After this the T will show on the board some errors but also things that they did very well during this stage, providing consisting feedback to the students.
