Main Aims

  • To develop students` reading skills for gist and specific information through the context of an email about a new job and colleagues.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce and practice vocabulary related to nationalities, jobs, and places
  • To give students practice speaking by describing people, their jobs, and nationalities, using the information from the email

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher shows a picture of Australia and asks: "Where is this?" - Australia Elicit: "What do you know about Australia?" Ask: "Do you work?, Do you have colleagues?", Where are they from?"

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher introduces key vocabulary: Australian, Japanese, manager, married, Brisbane, Osaka. Then, she shows pictures of flags words. Gives simple definitions or examples if students don't know the words. Models and drills pronunciation of new words. Matching task: Students match words with definitions. ICQs: - Are we reading now? (No) - Are we learning words? (Yes) - Are you matching words with definitions? (Yes) Quick pair-check of matching task answers. Short open class feedback to confirm answers.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The teacher gives students the reading text (email about the new job in Australia). Task instruction: Read the email quickly and answer these two questions: 1) Where is Mark now? 2) How many people work in his office? ICQs: - Are you reading quickly or slowly? (quickly) - Are you looking for big information or small details? (Big information) Students read individually for gist. After reading, students check answers in pairs. Open class feedback: The teacher elicits answers and writes correct ones the board.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-20 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The teacher gives students detailed comprehension questions: 1) Where is Tony from? 2) Who is Janine? 3) Where is Martin from? 4) Where is Yoko from? 5) Who is married? Instructions: Read the text again carefully and answer the questions: ICQs: - Are you reading for details or main ideas? (Details) - Are you working alone or with a partner first? (Alone) Students read and answer individually. Pair-check: Students compare answers with partners. Open class feedback: The teacher elicits answers, correct mistakes if needed, and writes answers on the board.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The teacher plays a short recording about people from different countries. Students listen and write Yes or No for each version. ICQs: - Are you listening or reading? (Listening) - Are you writing long answers or Yes/No? (Yes/No) Students complete individually. Pair-check answers. Open class feedback

Post-Reading Controlled Practice (15-25 minutes) (15-25 minutes) • To check students` understanding of key vocabulary and detailed comprehension of the email through controlled matching and true/false activities.

The teacher gives students two tasks: Task 1 (Fill in the blanks): Match the words to the parts of the email. (e.g, ___Hi Jerry, How are you?, How is England?) (Greeting). Task 2 (True/False): Read statements about the email and decide if they are true or false. Instructions: First, match the words to the parts of the email. Then read the sentences and write T(Ture) or F(False). ICQs: - Are you matching or writing full sentences? (Matching) - Are you checking your answers with your partner after? (Yes) Students complete both tasks individually first. After that, students check answers in pairs. Open class feedback: The teacher elicits answers and clarifies if necessary.
