Materials

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to give their opinions and ask for agreement in conversations by using appropriate expressions in everyday discussions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to soften their opinions in conversation by using "I guess" and "I feel like", to express ideas more tentatively and politely in discussions.

Procedure

Warmer (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher shows a photo of a man and asks: How does he feel and why? Then, reproduces a conversation in which two people ask about the man. The teacher then asks: What are his problems? What do his friends think he should do? (Evolve 3 p. 122)

Exposure (10-15 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

T. reproduces a conversation (Evolve 3 Ss. book p. 112) in which people give opinions and ask for agreement. She asks them to complete activity A from the worksheet. T.checks with the group and then, asks them to solve activity B from the worksheet individually. The teacher explains that it is often important to use gentle words, or to soften their comments, when they offer an opinion. She tells Ss that the words they use are important but so is their intonation, or the way they say those words. She asks a student to read the chart and then solve activity C.

Task (15-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

The teacher puts the students into pairs and gives them a speaking prompt in which they have to take sides on a situation and discuss it using the expressions seen previously. Then, she chooses some Ss. to role play that conversation.

Language Analysis (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

The teacher shares an online activity with the students so they can clarify the meaning of the expressions seen in class.
