Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the second conditional in the context of unreal situation or an imagination

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of if they were something or someone.

Procedure

warmer lead-in (3-4 minutes) • to set lesson context and engage students.

First I will greet the students. Second I will show them a picture of an old man thinking about something. I will ask them how old they think he is. Next I will show them another picture I will write if you were young again what you would do differently . I will make them work in pairs. They will come up with different answers. Then I will write the sentence of the old man ''if I were young i would buy a motorcycle''.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To focus more on the grammatical rules and to build the context

I will start by elicit the context of the second conditional. I will tell them they are going to look at unreal conditional. That are used to talk about things which are unreal or imaginary. I will read out the unreal conditional sentence on the board. First i will ask them which tense we use for the second conditional. I will ask the students to look at the situation I will draw the students attention to the fact that the example could equally well begin with if-clause ,i,e. that the two clauses are interchangeable without changing the meaning , but the punctuation changes. When the if clause comes after the main clause they aren't separated by a coma. When the if clause comes before the main clause, they are separated by a coma. I will go through it by giving another examples to make sure that everyone understands before I give the exercises

controlled practice of form (4-5 minutes) • gaps fill

In this exercise they will have to fill the gaps with the verbs in parentheses into the correct tense. They will work alone and will compare their answers in pairs then i will give then the answers key.

controlled practice of meaning (4-5 minutes) • to focus the students on the meaning of second conditional

They will write unreal conditional sentences based on the real situations. they will start each sentence with if. I will make the first sentence as an example They will work in pairs to do this exercise after they will compare their answers in group

semi-controlled practice of meaning (7-9 minutes) • To focus more on the grammatical rules and to give the students the chance to use it at the end

This exercise, they will do it in groups They will have 6 sentences to complete. They will have to choose 5 words. I will make the first one as an example. I will make it like a competition the first group that finish first will be the winner

free practice (10-12 minutes) • to provide students fluency and accuracy to apply the second conditional in the right context.

Each of them will have the if clause and they will have to give me the main clause they will have to use their imagination and to use the target language as much as they can. They can give me more than one. for the freer practice peers correction might be used.
