Description

In this lesson the students will read about a famous illusionist, and will do some while reading and post reading tasks; all of which will be followed by a post reading task by the help of which they will be able to talk about the topic and personalize it.

Main Aims

  • To provide scan, detailed and gist reading practice using a text about Head Games in the context of Magic, Mind-reading

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Discussion in the context of Magic, Mind reading

Procedure

Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To introduce Derren Brown about whom the students will read

-Derren Brown's picture will be shown and the Ss will be asked: who is he? what is his job? this will be quickly followed by a very short video clip about one of his shows, which is done to help Ss get the idea of the text which is mainly about his performances, the Ss should guess the answers to those questions,

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To set the context of the reading

-After exposing them to the related words, two questions will be asked: "what do you think is the difference between an illusionist, a magician and a hypnotist and a psychic?" "how do you feel about watching programs or shows performed by these kinds of people?" -The Ss will discuss them in pairs, by the help of which they can focus more on the differences between the new words as well as thinking about the main idea of the text in advance. -Whole class feedback

While-reading (Reading for Gist) (3-5 minutes) • To help the Ss focus on the general idea of the text

-The Ss will read the text quickly to find answers to these two questions: 1.What does Derren Brown say he is interested in: tricks of hands, tricks of the mind or both? 2.According to the writer, do most people want to know how magic tricks are done? - Paircheck - Nominating Ss, the teacher will get the feedback.

While-reading (Detailed reading 1) (5-10 minutes) • To help Ss go through details and do some true/false task

- The Ss will be asked to read the sentences and decide whether they are true, false or not given providing some reasons. - Pair check -whole class feedback

while reading(Detailed reading 2) (4-7 minutes) • To provide the Ss with a task helping them go through details of the text

-The Ss will be asked to read the text and answer the questions: What are his shows like? How did he learn standard forms of magic? What does he love the most about his job? What is the key to his success? -Pair check whole class feedback

While reading (Deduction) (3-5 minutes) • To help students guess the meaning of the words in the context

- The Ss will be asked to read the definitions and pay attention to the part of speech of each word and then guess it. - Pair-check - Nominating some Ss, the teacher will give the feedback.

Post-reading (5-10 minutes) • To give the students the chance to talk about the TL

- The Ss will be asked to discuss 3 questions of Ex3, for which they need to provide their ideas related to the things discussed in the text; in a group of three. -The Ss will be regrouped. -Nominating Ss, the T will get the feedback. - Each person will report what they discussed in their groups (if-time).
