Instructions: Present a short situation on the board: A student just arrived in a new country and doesn’t know how to take public transport. In pairs, students discuss: What questions might the student ask? What advice could someone give? Elicit: WH-questions: Where can I buy a ticket? How do I use the metro? Modal suggestions: You should get a transit card. You can ask a local.
First Listening Students take Cornell Notes: Left column: Modals and WH-words they hear Right column: Advice or tips mentioned Bottom: 2–3 sentence summary of what the speaker suggested Second Listening Focus on pronunciation and function of modals (should, can, must) and tone of WH-questions
Instructions: In small groups: Compare Cornell notes List 3 modal-based tips and 3 WH-questions from the speaker Create 2 new sentences of their own using similar structures (e.g., You should check reviews. Where can I find help?) Groups share 1 pair of sentences with the class.
Teacher reads 4 student-generated sentences. Students must decide: Is it a modal sentence or a WH-question? Quick group correction if needed. Ask: Which tip or phrase would you use in your own life abroad?
