W5 Speaking June 11 - Wednesday
A1-B1 Vets Gen2 level
Materials
Main Aims
-
Use modals (can, should, must, might, could) to express advice, possibility, and necessity in everyday contexts
Subsidiary Aims
-
Ask and respond to WH-questions related to navigating life abroad
Procedure (82-90 minutes)
Instructions: Instructor describes 2–3 scenarios involving someone new to a country: Someone just arrived and is lost Someone is trying to open a bank account Someone doesn’t know what food they’re buying In pairs, students brainstorm WH-questions they could ask to help (What do you need? Where is the bank? Why are you here?). Then, they switch and give 1–2 pieces of advice using modals
Instructions: Set up 4 conversation stations around the room with daily-life challenges written on paper: You can’t understand your landlord You missed your bus to work You are sick but don’t know where to go You want to meet new people At each station, students: Ask at least two WH-questions about the problem Give two pieces of advice using modals Then rotate. Example: What did you miss? Why were you late? You should call your boss. You could take a taxi next time.
Instructions: Each student draws a “Life Abroad” card with a brief problem or situation (e.g., lost phone, noisy neighbors, no internet). They must walk around the room and: Ask 1–2 WH-questions about someone else’s problem Give at least one suggestion using a modal Each interaction = 1 puzzle piece. Students must collect at least 4 unique pieces (conversations).
Instructions: Each student writes one WH-question and one modal sentence from today on a post-it or board. As a group, review 3 examples and briefly correct any errors. Celebrate strong language.
