W5 Speaking June 10 - Tuesday
A1-B1 Vets Gen2 level
Materials
Main Aims
-
Practice using modals for expressing advice, possibility, ability, and necessity in a veterinary context
Subsidiary Aims
-
Form and respond to WH-questions related to patient care and clinic duties
Procedure (84-90 minutes)
Write WH-question starters on the board: What…? Where…? When…? Why…? Who…? How…? Students work in pairs to brainstorm as many relevant veterinary questions as they can in 3 minutes. Examples: What should we do if the dog is aggressive? Where can we put the injured cat? Quick share-out. Instructor boards 3–4 strong examples.
Modal Sentence Ladder Instructions: Each pair receives a list of clinic situations (e.g., pet not eating, loud waiting room, late appointment). They must build 3 sentences for each using different modals: Example: The dog isn’t eating. We should check his temperature. He might be nervous. The owner must bring his vaccination records. Pairs share their strongest 2 sentences with another group. Vet-Client Question Board Instructions: Split class into two roles: vets and clients. Each client receives a case card (brief description of a pet’s issue). Each vet must ask at least 4 WH-questions to learn more. Then, they use modals to give suggestions or express opinions. Switch roles halfway through
Instructions: In a circle, each student gives one sentence of advice using a modal based on an issue they heard today. Examples: You should talk to the owner about the dog’s behavior. We could reschedule the appointment. She must wear gloves next time. Instructor highlights a few and corrects form if needed.
