Main Aims

  • Understand and describe scenes and events from a veterinary setting using there was / there were and quantifiers

Subsidiary Aims

  • Identify and process irregular past verbs and sequencing expressions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Instructions: Instructor describes short clinic scenarios using there was / there were + a quantifier: Students guess: What room is this? What happened? Pairs brainstorm their own 2 examples and challenge another group.

While-Reading/Listening (23-25 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

First Listening (with subtitles) Students fill out Cornell Notes: Left: irregular past verbs, quantifiers Right: what the vet saw/did, and where Bottom: one-sentence recap with there was / there were Second Listening Focus on pronunciation of past verbs and connector words (then, after that, before, later)

Post-Reading/Listening (13-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Instructions: In pairs: Choose 3 items from their Cornell notes (a verb, a quantifier, a location) Build 2 complete sentences using all three Share with another pair and identify which clinic situation it could describe

Wrap-Up (8-10 minutes) • To finalize the session and recap on what was done

Teacher reads 3 incorrect versions of student sentences anonymously and has the class help correct them.
