Description

In this lesson learn about 'past perfect'. They have one listening that two people are talking about their strange experiences. Students work on their listening skill first and then grammar. The there are controlled and less controlled exercises for the students to practice the grammar.

Main Aims

  • For the students to be able to use "past perfect" correctly at the end of the session.
  • To provide clarification of Past perfect in the context of Strange Experiences

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed and gist listening practice using a text about anecdote in the context of Strange Experiences

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • to engage the students

The teacher tells an unreal story and pre-teaches the new lexis.

Pre-Listening (6-8 minutes) • Listening for gist

The teacher plays the audio and students will listen and tick the topics that speakers talk about. Students check their answers in pairs. Teacher plays the audio again. Teacher gives the answer key.

While-Listening (5-7 minutes) • Listening for detail

Students will note down as much information as they can. They will talk in pairs and decide which story is the strangest. Teacher gets feedback.

Teaching Grammar (9-11 minutes) • To test students' awareness of the grammar

The teacher gives the HOs and asks students to match the sentences. Then they should decide which action happened first. Students check their answers in pairs. Teacher elicits the grammar rule. Teacher asks CCqs: How may actions do we have? When did they happen? Which one happened first? Teacher drills and then elicits the form.

Controlled practice (4-5 minutes) • For the students to practice the new grammar (past perfect)

The teacher gives a HO. Students will make sentences in the past using the verbs in the brackets alone and then check in pairs. Teacher writes the answers on the board.

Freer practice (7-10 minutes) • To personalize the activity

Students will make a strange experience and tell each other. Teacher gets feedback.
