Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson SS learn and practice the language required for telling the time, ordering food and drinks and meeting and introducing people.

Procedure

Lead in (5-6 minutes) • To set the context of the lesson

Elicit what Sts can remember on episode 1 about Rob and Jenny. Show Rob's picture and ask - What's his name? Where does he live? Show Jenny's picture and ask - What's her name? Where does she live? SS discuss in pairs - open class feedback If most of the Sts don't remember - play the last scene of episode 1

Stage 1 (20-25 minutes) • SS practice the vocabulary required to tell time.

T to provide instructions T has pics of clocks with different times around the room. SS has a list of phrases. They have to walk around and match the clocks with the phrases. SS get back to their seats and compare their answers with a partner. T to monitor and check sts understanding and provide error correction where required. Feedback through listening. T to highlight the following -that from 12 o' clock to half past (right hand side of the clock) all times are with past, and that from half past to 12 o' clock (the left hand side) all times are expressed with to. T to highlight pronunciation of half - with silent l T to highlight that Sts can either say it's nine or nine o' clock Sts listen again to the recording and repeat. Sts practice how to ask and tell time through a practice activity. T to provide language required for asking and telling time. Sentences displayed on the board while sts do the practice activity. - What time is it? What's the time? It's quarter to 9 Thank you You're welcome. T to monitor and provide error correction.

Stage 2 (10-12 minutes) • Listening for gist - Sts watch a video in the context of the video series

T to provide instructions Sts watch a video and answer a listening for gist question. Feedback through nomination. Sts watch the video again and answer T/F questions . Sts to work alone and discuss in groups. Each group to write answers on small white boards and exchange them. Peer correction and feedback.

Stage 3 (12-15 minutes) • Sts watch and listen for specific information in the context of buying coffee

T to ask Sts to look at the menu and think about what they would like to order. They discuss in pairs. T to monitor and check understanding. T to go through vocabulary that sts find difficult. Sts watch video and answer questions in exercise B. Sts complete the exercise alone and discuss in groups. Feedback - Answers in post its around the room. Sts find it and discuss Sts watch video again and complete the phrases. Feedback on IWB. Sts listen and repeat the phrases to copy the intonation.

Stage 4 (10-12 minutes) • Controlled Practice - Sts practice the language used for ordering food and drink in the context of the lesson

T to provide instructions and role cards. Sts to role play the dialogue that they heard in groups of three and then swap roles. T to monitor and error correct where necessary.

Stage 5 (7-9 minutes) • Listening for specific information in the context of first day in office

Sts watch a video and answer questions. They work alone and then discuss in pairs. feedback through nomination.

Stage 6 • Controlled practice - Sts practice the Social English
