Description

In this lesson, students read and analyze the famous speakers' quotes. Gist reading is followed by the detailed one and the class is ended up with the discussion about their favorite quotes.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about famous quotes in the context of successful speakers

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide pronunciation practice, listening to and speaking about the famous quotes in the context of successful speakers

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1) Picture of Ataturk + 3 sentences about Ataturk's personality 2) FB -try to elicit successful public speaker, if not question: How did he lead the nation? Which personality traits helped him?

Pre-Reading (6-9 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1) Pictures of other successful speakers -- Any familiar ones? Elicit the names İf any unknown ----2) grouping and research on the unknown ones (max 3 sentences to be written) 3) cutout names given 4) small presentations

Pre- teaching vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1) PPP slide with challenging words --elicit the meanings for the unknown ones 2) check the meanings in pairs 3)WCFB

While-Reading #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

1) HOs with texts 2) PPP How many speakers are mentioned in the text? - 8 Do they have something in common? - They are all politicians and famous public speakers. 3) Nominate students for FB

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

1) Complete the quotes exercise instructions 2) Pair check 3) FB - answer key on the board

Listening for intonaton, pauses and stress words (10-12 minutes) • To improve students' pronunciation

1) İnstruct to listen and pay attention to the details listed on the board 2) Elicit the intonation, pauses and stressed words 3) FB - Nominate students to read the quotes out loud

Speaking (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1) Instruct to choose their favorite 2 quotes and share with the partner why 2) Nominate a few students for FB
