The overall concept of this reading lesson is about first day of work, its problems, and solutions for getting it right.

Main Aims

  • To provide
  • To provide skimming and detailed reading and comprehension practice using a text about probems of first day of work and "how to survive your first day in a new office?"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of first day nerves . Commenting what they think about whether or not these tips can be useful in a new class or on a new course.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this stage, the students are asked: “Imagine that somebody you know is starting a new office job tomorrow. Think of two important tips you could give him or her to make the first day go well.”

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students are going to be taught the meaning of the vocabularies: Survive- Impress- Solve- Enthusiastic- Colleague- Employee. They will try to guess the meaning of the words using pictures, explanations, illustrations, etc. and then they will be asked to use the words in some examples.

While-Reading#1 (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading tasks

In this stage, the students will read an article. Afterward they are asked to say whether or not there tips are there.

While-Reading #2 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

In this stage, the students are going to read Top tips A-G from exercise c in page 54. Then they are going to read the article again, and put them in the correct place (1-7).

Post-Reading (2-4 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The students will be asked to discuss the following questions in groups of 3: - Which tip do you think is the most important? - Do you think any of the tipscould also be useful for the first day in a new class or on a course?
