Reading and vocabulary lesson

In this lesson, students will learn about some vocabularies we usually use to talk about beaches. They will have some beautiful pictures on the board and I will ask them if they have been to any beaches like these. which one they would most like to visit and I will encourage them to give reasons. After they will have a short reading to find some clues. A matching exercise and freer practice at the end.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about exotic beaches in the context of describing them.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of vocabulary in the context of travel for holiday.


warmer lead in (5-8 minutes) • To set context and engage students

I will stick three pictures of beautiful beaches on the board and I will ask the students to look at the three pictures of beaches and to say whether they have been to any of beach like this. I will ask them which one they would most like to visit and I will encourage them to give reasons.

While-Reading #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide gist for next activity

They will have to read an extract of the beach and match it with one of the pictures. I will ask them to read it quickly and decide which of the pictures it describes

Functional language analysis (10-12 minutes) • Matching exercise

I will tell the students to work together to match the words or expressions with their correct definitions. After the exercise, I will check the answers and give them the answer keys. I will go through the list with the class and make sure that they understand all the items.

while reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Now they will read the extract again more carefully and decide whether they are true are false. When checking answers, I will encourage the students to correct the false statements.

free practice (7-10 minutes) • Feed back. I want to know if they understand the vocabulary.

I will ask the students to discuss places in their city or country that match the descriptions in the list in pairs. For example: which places in Turkey are unspoilt? Where the views are spectacular? Where young people go to hang out and be seen? Where can you hardly move for people at weekends and summer? I will go around giving help and encouragement. I will ask some students to give their description to the class.
