In this lesson, the students are going to be taught about writing a biography using a sample reading while focusing on relevant expressions, phrases, vocabulary and grammar.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this stage I am going to ask the students if they know what a biography is? and Can they tell what kind of information do we usually find in a biography? and If they can name some famous people who have biographies written about.

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

In this stage after clarifying the words "divorce" and "finance", I will ask two questions about the model text from the book (Who is the biography about? and what do you think is his profession?). Then I will write three questions on the board and want them to read the text in detail and find the answers (When did his parents divorced? / What was the name of the movie that he starred in with Ben Affleck? / In how many movies has he appeared?). Finally, I will check the answers with them and give them feedbacks on their answers.

Useful Language (9-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

In this stage, I will ask the students to tell me how many paragraphs they saw in the text and what each one of them is about, then I will show them the layout for a typical biographical text which consists of 3 paragraphs. Moreover, I will clarify the most common tenses that we use in a biography for both dead and alive famous people. Finally, I will clarify the most common expressions, phrases and vocabulary regarding biography and describing people’s lives from birth to death using a table.

Productive Task(s) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

In this stage, the students are going to write a biographical text about their favourite famous person using the layout that they have been taught and the expressions and vocabularies.

Feedback and Error Correction • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

In this stage, after students finished their writings, I will collect them and give each students a writing that their classmates wrote and want them to just write a quick summary of what was done well and what could have been better about the text that they have given. Finally, I will collect the writings and give write some feedbacks for students individually.
