Description

In this lesson, the students are introduced to some basic quantifiers through a guided discovery in the context of a Guatemalan and American family meal. Then, they undergo a controlled practice by doing an activity . This activity is followed by a semi-controlled practice in which students will complete some sentences with personal information. The lesson comes to an end with an integrated speaking / writing activity where they are likely to produce the target language both in written and spoken form.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Quantifiers ( a lot of/ lots of-some-not much/not many) in the context of food

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a paragraph in the context of week's food

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in target language.

Teacher asks about Peter Menzel ( who is he? what does he do?he is a photojournalist).Teacher shows two pictures to find differences between Guatemalan and American family meal.T asks whether they have the same meal or different. T elicits some food in both families. Such as processed food, vegetables, fruit, meat, pizza, carrots and etc. Ss work in pairs and talk about different meals.

Presenting grammar through guided discovery (6-8 minutes) • To expose students to the target language and let them discover it

Teacher shows Guatemalan and American family meals and asks what they eat. T continues to elicit the marker sentences; The Guatemalan family eats a lot of fruit. They don't eat much processed food. The American family don't eat many vegetables. They eat some fruit. Ss get the gap-fill handout.First, they work individually and fill in the blanks with the quantifiers and then they check in pairs .T elicits why they think those quantifiers have been used in each case. Teacher uses CCQs to clarify the meaning and the usage. Teacher shows the form and function and then draws a table on the board students should work in groups and put the correct picture under the each column(a lot of, not much and etc.)

Controlled practice for use of quantifiers (5-8 minutes) • To have more practice on TL

Teacher divides the whole class into five groups. The students read and correct the mistakes individually. Then they can check the answers in their groups. Teacher will give them the answer key after that.

Semi-Controlled Speaking Practice (6-8 minutes) • To get the students to use the target language to talk about their food habbits

Teacher gives the students a handout and asks them to complete the sentences with the information that is true about them. The teacher asks them to do this task individually. Once done with this task, the students discuss their answers in pairs.

Freer writing (10-15 minutes) • To give students a chance to use the target language in writing in freer way

Teacher has four pictures of Peter Menzel. The Class is divided into four groups. Each group plans a menu, based on what they see in the photos. They can use " I would like...and...some.." they have 5 or 6 minutes. Then swap their texts in their groups.
