Upper Intermediate level

Description

TP2 Lesson Plan

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide reading practice for gist and detail in the context of trusting your instincts.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide extended speaking fluency practice as Ss talk about times they have or haven't listened to and trusted their instincts.
  • To reinforce students’ understanding and use of topic-specific lexis, including collocations related to opinions, decision-making, and cognition e.g. make a decision, show a preference for, gather information, be based on, jump to conclusions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Personalise The Topic: Introduce the topic by sharing the title of the reading text, "Trust Your Instincts". Ask Ss if they know the meaning of "instincts". If yes ask CCQs: Are instincts something you think about carefully? (No). Do instincts happen quickly or slowly? (Quickly). Are instincts learned or natural? (Natural) If no spend 1 minute on meaning before exploring Lead-in questions. Synonyms: Intuition, sense, hunch, feeling, gut feeling. Add Lead-in prompting questions to chat and then invite students to share experiences related to the questions. 1. "Have you ever jumped to conclusions about someone and later changed your mind?" 2. "Do you usually make decisions quickly, or do you prefer to gather information first? Or both?"

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Meaning: Share google slide of matching game for collocations and meaning. Ss to work individually in group zoom for 2 minutes. Demonstrate example and ask CCQs: Check answers as a group. Form: If meaning task is completed early then utilise google slide task, "Collocation Form Focus" in Student Centric, OC answer finding by asking them to fill in the gaps and explain why.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist information reading tasks.

Reading for Gist Gist - Share in chat the extracted text as a pdf and the google form covering Ex 5a. Screen share the google form. Instruct the students that they are to work individually and read the text for gist then answer the questions provided in the shared google form. Allow 5 minutes for task completion then screen share the results and correct answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks.

Share the reading for detail google form in chat and then screen share to ask CCQs for completing the task ensuring they understand the questions being asked. Instruct the students that they are to read the text again and this time reading for detailed information. Students are to check answers in pairs, discussing how they got their answer before a quick overview of correct answers via screen share in group zoom room.

Post-Reading (14-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned.

Students are to be offered the following questions, shared in the chat, as discussion prompts for paired work in breakout rooms. Monitor students by joining rooms without mic or picture. They can answer 1 or more questions. Take notes for DEC. 1. Have you ever made a quick decision based on first impressions? Did it turn out to be a good or bad decision? What happened? 2. Do you think it's possible to trust your instincts in important situations, like choosing a job, choosing a partner, or diagnosing a health problem? Why or why not? 3. The text says height may affect hiring decisions, even when it shouldn’t. Can you think of any other reasons people might have when making quick judgments? Save 2 - 3 minutes for OCFB on the task followed by DEC.
