Description

In this lesson ss will practise the skills of reading. Later on in the lesson students will have the opportunity to practise the sub-skills of writing and speaking. The focus of the lesson will be on days of the week and what they do as their weekly routine. Skimming for gist and scanning for detail will be part of the reading task.

Main Aims

  • READING: To provide gist reading practice using a text about days and times in the context of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday... etc.

Subsidiary Aims

  • WRITING: To provide accuracy within writing practice in a list of tasks in present simple about days and times in the context of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, 1:00, 2 o'clock, three o'clock.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

11:15 - 11:20 Greet Ss in a friendly (not over friendly), respectable and quick manner Introduce Ss to Tufan. Where is Tufan from? How old is Tufan? Where does Tufan live? Does Tufan like music? Do you like music?

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss will listen to the 'Days of the week' song and complete the questionnaire in PW - matching strong to weak students. Ss will use a blank calendar on WB to practise the days of the week.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging scanning for details and specific information reading tasks

Do you remember Tufan? Ss will have a controlled scanning for gist task where they will have to read about the activities of Tufan day by day. (Students will use scanning for gist to pick out specific information. True / false exercise (T/F) handout (HO)

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks (skimming for gist)

ss will have all the information about Tufan and will have to answer more complex questions about Tufan's days and activities. (open questions)

Post-Reading (Writing) (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity for the ss to compose a personal version of the language they've been reading
