Procedure (52-60 minutes)
Prompt: Have you ever moved to a new city or country? What were the first things you had to do? Students discuss in pairs and list 3 actions someone does when arriving in a new place (e.g., looked for housing, bought groceries, found a clinic). Instructor boards verbs and sequences them chronologically.
First Listening Students complete Cornell Notes: Left: key verbs, new expressions Right: major events and experiences Bottom: short summary using past tense and connectors Second Listening Students listen again and underline/mark: Irregular past verbs (e.g., went, met, found) Time expressions (then, after that, later)
Instructions: In pairs, students: Use their notes to retell the speaker’s story in 5 steps Include at least 3 irregular past verbs Use sequencing words to order the events
Class reflects: What helped you follow the speaker’s story? What new phrases or verbs did you learn? Instructor boards 2–3 verbs or expressions from students’ notes and clarifies meaning or pronunciation.
