Description

This is a freer speaking lesson in the context of business planning. Students set up their own companies or create their own product having been introduced to the basic business vocabulary before the speaking activity. Students are presented some functional language to use while debating.

Materials

Main Aims

  • Students practice Freer speaking skills in the context of setting up a company/creating a product

Subsidiary Aims

  • • To practice the function language (suggesting, giving opinions, commenting) • To practice the Third Conditional while discussing about setting up a new business/company

Procedure

Lead In (3-5 minutes) • Arouse the ss interest in the lesson

Elicit what an ad is, write on the board. “You are going to watch a video. It is an ad but the product advertised s not known. Think what it can be.” “Merve, what are we doing?” Show the video

Post-video (5-7 minutes) • Ss are exposed to the new vocab in the context of business planning/Brainstorming

1. Elicit what product it can be 2. Elicit the new vocabulary a) What is a logo? Could you see any in the video? (business plan, slogan, target market, promotion) b) Divide the ss into groups. Ask: “What could the product in this video be? You have 1 minute to decide on 3 things it can be in your groups.” Ss decide and give answers.

Freer Speaking (12-14 minutes) • To give ss speaking practice in discussing/debating while creating their own business plan1. Use the function language of giving opinions/suggesting/commenting 2. To develop speaking skills consolidating recently taught language

“You will make a business plan for a company or a product you have decided on. You will discuss the business plan in groups using the new language. The grid will help you organise your business plan” Ask ICQs Give demo example Ss get the HOs with • a grid to fill in • the functional language to use (I suggest we focus on… / How about etc…)

Follow up /Freer Speaking/Listening (7-8 minutes) • 1. Use the function language of giving opinions/suggesting/commenting 2. To develop speaking skills consolidating recently

1. “You have your companies set up. Now you will share your ideas with the other groups, comment and suggest fresh ideas for your business plans” Ss are regrouped in the way that everybody gets a chance to listen to a different group's business plan. Ss listen and speak (comment on each other's companies) using the target language. 2. Ss go back to their own groups. They report the ideas they have heard.

Feedback/Giving suggestions on the others' business plans (5-7 minutes) • Ss practice giving opinions and suggesting ideas / Ss practice Third Conditional structure in the context of giving recommendations on improving their peers' business plan

Ss are back to their groups and they have to comment on the other groups' Business plan (each group gets 1 business plan). Ss work in pairs within the group. Each pair have to note down 2 recommendations using 3rd Conditional. T gives a demo example T gives out HO with a prompt. Ss share their ideas on how to improve the business/product.
