Description

In this lesson the students will learn numbers 13-100 and will notice and practice the stress pattern in numbers. They will listen to five conversations and complete a fill in the gap exercise with numbers. They will also practice asking about things/people's age: "How old is she/he?".

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of numbers in the context of talking about how old things/people are.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information in the context of talking about how old things/people are.
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of talking about how old things/people are.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To engage the students and set the context of what is coming next

T will show the picture of her birthday party with a birthday cake that has a question mark on it instead of candles, and ask the Ss to work with their partners and guess about her age. ICQs: (with gestures) How old is Elham/Meyla? T will write this question on the board: "How old is Elham? she is....". Then the teacher will elicit the Ss' answers and write an answer on the board.

Language Input (10-13 minutes) • To teach the Ss new vocabulary. (Numbers 13-100)

T will review the numbers 1-12 very quickly by showing the white flashcards to the Ss and eliciting the numbers, and then sticking the flashcards to the right/left side of the board on the wall. Then T will show the pink flashcards(13-19) and the green one(20) to them, elicit and drill the numbers and stick them one by one on top of the board. After that the T will show, elicit, drill and stick the orange flashcards(21-29), And finally the green ones(30-100). Stress patern of numbers will be emphasized here. Then T will give the written form of the numbers to the Ss randomly and asks them to stand up and match and stick them to the numbers on the board. First the pink flashcards, then the orange ones and finally the green ones. Ins will be given by gestures.

Controlled-practice (2-3 minutes) • To practice the new vocabulary

T will give the Ss a simple matching handout and ask them to match the words with the numbers(1 min). ICQs: (with gesture) pair/alone?, time? Then T will ask them to share their answers in pairs. Then T will give them An answer key.

Lead-in (listening) (2-4 minutes) • To engage the Ss and prepare them for the listening sectoin

T will show the book's picture to the Ss and ask them to say the things that they see in it. Then T will ask them to match the numbers with the pictures and then to share their answers together. (WCF).

Listening 2 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening

T will ask the Ss to fill the blanks and play the recording again. ICQ: Write? Then Ss will share their answers together and T will check their answers randomly.

Freer Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they have learned

T will refer the Ss back to the pic and write these language madels on the board: How old is the girl? She is .... How old is the dog? It is .... Then T will ask the Ss to ask and answer the Qs with their partners.

Practice (Speaking) (7-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they have learned

T will show the book's picture to Ss and ask them to guess the age of people in it with their partners. T will write the model on the board: How old is Leyla? I think she is ....

Practice vocabulary (Game) (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to practice the new vocabulary

T will devide the Ss to two groups and ask them to stand up around a table( T will group the Ss by giving them two numbers 14 & 40. Number 40s go to one group and number 14s go to another group). Then T will put the number flashcards on the tables and ask them to match the numbers to the words. The group who finishes first is the winner.
