Main Aims

  • To improve students'reading skills by practising reading for gist and scanning for specific information

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of adjectives (character) in the context of Wildlife-animals

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To get the learners interested in the topic and make an explicit link between the topic of the text and the students' own lives.

Ask the students : - Why do some people feel happier or calmer in the presence of animals? -In Turkey do people gnerally feel posiitive towards animalsor not? Why? -In Turkey which animals are most feared or dislike ? Why?

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text

-PW, Ask SS to pick an animal - In pairs ask them to decide whether these would make good pets or not by stating their reasons. -Ask them to think of 3 words to describe animal they have picked. -Collect these adjectives in box on one side of the board.

While-Reading (15-20 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Give them HOs -Ask : What adjectives would you use to describe the dolphin in the photo.Elicit a few answers from the SS and write them on the board.( possible answers:cute,playful,docile,obedient,tame) -Ask SS to read the article and underline all the accusations made against dolphins. -Ask them compare the description of the dolhins in the article to their descriptions. -Ask SS to read the letter written in response to the article and find which of the accusations in the article it answers. -PW -Tell SS to look back at the accusation they underlined in the article and then underline the answers to the accusations in the letter.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-7 minutes) • To focus on lexis

- Give SS HOs -Ask them to match the adjectives to the animals.PW.More than one answer is possible

Post-Reading (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-GW.Discussion -In groups of 3 or 4 ask SS to discuss ( Do you think people should be stopped from swimming with dolphins? Why or why not?/ Do you agree with the letter writer that animals have a right to privacy? Why or why not? -
