In this lesson, Ss will learn about future perfect and continuous.

Main Aims

  • To review and extend Ss awareness' of future perfect and continuous, and give controlled and semi-controlled practice in them, in the context of future goals.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking fluency.


Lead-in/Presentation/Focus on Meaning (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks Ss to look at the reading from the previous lesson and find out what the World Health Organisation hopes for 2020, and what health workers plans are for cure and prevention of polio. Encourage Ss to notice the target sentences - "Hopes are high that..." and "Health workers will be ...". Get these sentences onto the board. Ss use Grammar ex1 to think about meaning. After the demonstration and ICQs, QAs will help doing this procedure.

Focus on Form (5-8 minutes) • To involve students in finding the form

Ss use Grammar ex2 to think about meaning. T will highlight the form on the example sentences on the board.

Controlled Practice (6-9 minutes) • To prepare the students to practice the TL

T will ask the Ss what the situation is for AIDS- is it curable/preventable? then they read p135 ex7 through and check without writing anything. Then Ss work in pairs/groups to complete ex7. Then check the answers.

Controlled Practice (6-9 minutes) • To prepare the students to practice the TL

Get the students to notice the time phrases in ex 7- ''by the year ..." and ''over the next twenty years ..." and notice which future form they are used with - perfect or continuous. Grammar ex 3- focus Ss on the ''vision 2020'' text and ask what their goals are. Elicit a couple, then Ss complete the rest using future future perfect or continuous.

Semi-controlled practice/Personalisation/Speaking (10-15 minutes) • To provide the Ss with semi-controlled and free practice of the target language.

Ask Ss what their goals are for the future in healthy/job/family,etc. Ss complete prompts in speaking ex2 on their on. Monitor and help with form and accuracy. before the lesson prepare some of your own examples. Use these as a model for the instruction- and after the Ss have completed their prompts- to do some drilling. Drill full sentences and keep them natural- so Ss practice the contracted form " I'll've ..." then Ss compare their ideas for the prompts in pairs- speaking ex 2. take some accuracy.
