Description

In this lesson students are going to learn about the passive voice in the context of inventions through PPP. After this lesson students might better be able to use passive voice sentences to describe events or actions where the doer is unknown or unimportant. The lesson will be finished with a discussion task about famous inventions.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of passive voice{ be+ past participle} in the context of Inventions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation about inventions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this stage I will talk about some inventions and i will ask the students about what they know about them. I will introduce the topic using some images and ask questions to engage them.

Exposure (2-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

In this stage I will ask students to read a few sentences from the coursebook about inventions. I will ask questions to help them notice the use of passive voice. Page 82 of American English File 2

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Here I will write a few passive voice sentences from the text on the board and ask the students to notice the structure( be+ past participle)

Clarification (3-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will clarify meaning by asking CCQs(Is the doer known? No. Is the focus on the action or doer?)Then i will draw a timeline to explain tense. I will also explain the structure clearly and try to focus on the participation of the participles.

Controlled Practice (2-4 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will do the exercise from the grammar bank page 145. They will have 2 mins to answer the questions and the students will work in pairs and then we will check the answers together.

Free Practice (2-3 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will talk in groups about some common inventions and try to make passive voice sentences. They will share their favorite invention with the class.
