Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of listening for gist and for specific detail.

Procedure

Vocabulary Warm-up (5-7 minutes) • To set the scene for the vocabulary section and engage the students

T asks SS if they remember his name from the previous TP and where he comes from. He elicits other information that they can remember about him and writes them on the board. He asks students how he can contact his family and friends in Iran (cellphone, email, social network). He asks students to discuss the following questions: 1- Do you have an email address? 2- How often do you send emails? In FB, he asks a few students to answer the questions.

Vocabulary # 1 (3-5 minutes) • To learn how to say email and website addresses

T holds up the vocabulary handout and tells SS that there are two email and two website addresses. T elicits/explains what a website is. T asks students to look at the list and just listen to them. ICQS; 1- How many email addresses are there? (2) 2- How many website addresses are there? (2) 3- Should you listen and repeat? (NO) T gives out the HO. T plays audio 1.16 and SS listen. He plays the audio again and students repeat the email addresses chorally and individually.

Vocabulary # 2 (2-3 minutes) • To check how we say the symbols in email and website addresses

T writes the symbols and letters on the board and elicits how we say them. He asks 4 SS to read each address from exercise 1 to check the pronunciation of the symbols.

Communication Activity (5-7 minutes) • To practice saying email and website addresses

T holds up a handout and explains that each student has 3 email and website addresses. SS should work in pairs and read them out to each other. They shouldn't show their paper to their partner. Their partner should listen and write them down. T demonstrates the task. ICQs: - Who starts first? A or B? (no difference) - Can you show your paper to your partner? (No) - Can you ask your partner to repeat? (Yes) T puts students in pairs and gives them the handouts. Teacher monitors SS while they are dictating their list to their partner and collects a few pronunciation errors (if any) for WC FB. In FB, teacher asks 3 student As and 3 Bs to read 1 item from their list.

Vocabulary Wrap-up (1-2 minutes) • To personalize saying email addresses

T asks some SS to come to the board to write their email addresses.

Listening Warm-up (3-5 minutes) • To set the context of the listening

T directs students' attention to the 3 pictures on page 13 and elicits the name of each place. Teacher shows them other pictures of the same places to make sure they recognize the places and writes them on the board. He asks SS when we go to each place.

Listening for gist (4-6 minutes) • To understand where each dialogue takes place

T holds up the book and explains that students are going to listen to 2 conversations and they should write the number of each conversation next to each photo. ICQs: 1- How many dialogues are there? 2 or 3? (2) 2- How many pictures are there? (3) 3- What do you do with the pictures? (match 2 of them with dialogues) T plays Audios 1.17 and 1.18. SS listen and match. SS check their answers in pairs. Teacher checks the answers with the WC.

Detailed Listening (8-10 minutes) • To get some detailed information from each dialogue

T asks SS to read the topics in pairs and see if they can remember the answers from the audio. He reads each option and elicits what information they need in the answers. T plays the audios. SS listen and write the information. SS check their answers in pairs. SS listen again (if necessary) and check in pairs. T asks some SS to come to the board and write the answers.

Post-listening (3-5 minutes) • To talk about the context of the listening

T writes the following questions on the board: 1- Do you often stay in hotels? Why? Why not? 2- What's your favorite hotel in Turkey? Why do you like it? 3- Can you name some hospitals in Istanbul? T asks SS do discuss them in groups of 3 or 4. T demonstrates the task. SS discuss the questions and T monitors their discussion and writes their major problems on the WB for later self or peer correction. T asks a few students in each group to answer the questions.
