Materials

Abc 2 listening and 2 grammar exercises

Main Aims

  • practicing the difference between the past simple and the past continuous

Subsidiary Aims

  • to identify key information and to recognise and practice the function of 3 narrative tenses

Procedure

giving handouts and introducing the listening exercises 1+2 (32-35 minutes) • to get them ready to hear the recording and understand the content

First, I will give them handouts and have them concentrate on the photos of the three people who will be interviewed and explain that they will hear these people being interviewed and asked about past experiences and explain in general what that will be hearing.

doing the first part of the listening exercise (36-38 minutes) • making sure they understand clearly what they hear

I am going to play the first part of the recording ans ask students to listen and draw an arrow to connect Andy's story

Doing the rest of the listening exercise (39-41 minutes) • making sure they can solve the whole exercise after they listened

play the two other recordings and ask students to connect the main inf of the stories.

asking to remember details from the recordings with a partner • testing their memory for rememebring details

I would ask them to work with a partner to remember some other details of the three stories.

exercise 2 with the whole class • to determine what tense should be used in different example

I would answer the question with the whole class and then ask them to work with a partner to ask and answer the questions in Exercise 1 after giving as much details as I can.

Grammar exercise 1 • making sure the grammatical is very clear

Reviewing some grammar briefly about the past simple and the past continuous and then, ask them to read the rule and complete the gaps with simple or continuous in Exercise 1 with a partner and after two minutes checking the answers with the whole class and clarify anything unclear.

Grammar exercise 2 • total clarification of the difference between the two tenses

ask the students to complete the remaining gaps individually and then, go around and help them in case anyone is struggling with the difference between the two tenses after that, checking the answer with the whole class.

Extra clarification • prepare the class for the next lesson with my colleague in terms of grammar

asking for any extra explanations if needed
