Subsidiary Aims

  • Practice asking follow-up questions to clarify plans

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Prompt: “What is one thing you’re going to do this afternoon?” “What is something you didn’t plan but will probably do?” Students respond in pairs, then share one answer with the class. Board a few example structures: → “I’m seeing a dog at 3.” / “I’ll probably write reports later.”

Productive Task(s) (58-60 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Activity:Who Does What? Pairs receive small fictional clinic schedules (with missing entries). They must ask/answer using future forms: “Will you handle the vaccination?” “Is Luisa preparing the OR this morning?” Switch roles after 5–6 questions. Instructor monitors for correct structure Clinic Planning Meeting Set-up: Groups of 3–4 simulate a morning clinic briefing. Each student takes a role (vet, tech, assistant, receptionist). Goal: Plan the day using a blank template. Each member must: Offer 2 future actions Respond to 2 future requests Ask 2 clarification questions Example language: → “I’ll take the 10 a.m. surgery.” → “Are you seeing the chihuahua at 1?” → “Can you help me after lunch?” Instructor circulates to support, then selects 1–2 strong examples to share.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Whole-Class Reflection: “What phrases were easiest to use? Which were new?” Students vote on the most useful expression from the day. Instructor boards 2 common errors and corrects as a group. Optional homework: Prepare to describe your next clinic day (3–4 future actions) for Tuesday’s warm-up.
