Main Aims

  • To enable students to use the comparative form in the context of describing cities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students to practice their writing skills and to extend their grammar range in the context of describing cities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T. let Ss know that they will have a grammar lesson T. shares a Google Slide with pictures from two cities: Cairo and Sharm El Sheikh. T. asks Ss what do they know about each city, based on the pictures. T. elicits difficult words from the pictures (Cairo: has the Pyramids, many mosques, camels. Sharm El Sheikh: has beautiful beaches, camels also and you can go snorkelling) T. annotates in the slides Ss contibutions and the new vocabulary (Pyramids, mosque, go snorkelling, coral reef, camel)

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T. shares screen and on zoom's chat a link to a Google Forms with two small articles and a multiple choice question: Read these sentences. Which sentence is false? The Sels Hotel is smaller than the Shokran Hotel Cairo is hotter than Sharm El Sheikh Cairo is probably noisier Cairo is more crowded than Sharm El Sheikh -->The holiday in Cairo is more expensive T. explains Ss should read quickly and choose the best option. T. asks ICQ's: - How many answers do you have to choose? (One) - Do you have to find a true or al false sentence? (A false) Ss. read the text T. shows the correct answer and as Ss to justify theirs with the text

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning T. brings Ss. attention to the sentences: The Sels Hotel is smaller than the Shokran Hotel Cairo is hotter than Sharm El Sheikh Cairo is probably noisier Cairo is more crowded than Sharm El Sheikh The holiday in Cairo is more expensive T. ask Ss to focus on sentece A: "The Sels Hotel is smaller than the Shokran Hotel" and asks CCQ's: Am I talking about one hotel or two hotels? (Two hotels) Are the hotels the same or different? (Different) T. clarifies the meaning of the target language on a Zoom board. T. ask Ss to choose the best word. "We use the comparatives to __________ (describe / mention / compare) two places, people or things" (compare) Form: T. shares screen with a completing exercise. T explains Ss have to look at the sentences (the ones from the gist task) and complete the rules: Most 1-syllable adjectives (small, old) --> add ______ (-er) 1-syllable adjectives ending in consonant + vowel + consonant (hot, big, etc.) --> double the last consonant and add _______ (-er) 2-syllable adjectives ending in -y (noisy, happy, etc.) change the -y to ______ (i) and add _______ (-er) Other 2- and 3-syllable adjectives (crowded, expensive, etc.) --> put _______ (more) before the adjective. The comparatives for good and bad are irregular: good --> better, bad --> worse. When we compare two different things we use ______ (than) after the comparative. T. demonstrates the task Ss work in pairs T. shows the correct answers

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T. shares screen and via Zoom's chat a link with a fill in the gaps exercise. T. eplains Ss should complete the blanks with the comparative form of the adjectives in brackets and than if necessary: E.g. Cairo's ___________ Sharm's. (interesting) MORE INTERESTING THAN 1. Sharm's ___________ . (beautiful) MORE BEAUTIFUL 2. Sharm looks ___________ Cairo. (nice) NICER THAN 3. Cairo's ___________ Sharm. (busy) BUSIER THAN 4. Cairo's ___________ Sharm. (good) BETTER 5. Cairo looks ___________ Sharm. (big) BIGGER THAN T demonstrates the task by doing the first question altogether. T. asks ICQ’s: Should you complete the blanks with any adjective? (No, the one in brakets) Do you always have to use "than"? (No) Ss. complete the activity individually T. nominates Ss. to share their answers in an open class feedback. Pron: T. shares an audio with the correct pronunciation of the sentences. T. ask Ss to copy stress and weak form of than. Ss repeat the sentences

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T. shows the next task on screen and sends the link via zoom. T. explains Ss will write five sentences comparing two cities from their country. Ss can use the suggested words or their own ideas. T. demonstrates the task with two argentinian cities: Ciudad de Buenos Aires is bigger than Mendoza Mendoza is quieter than Ciudad de Buenos Aires Ss. work individually Ss. share in groups their cities' comparisons. T. monitors students T. nominates Ss to expose what they have discussed to the whole group.

Feedback and Error Correction (2-4 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T. shares a zoom board to write down mistakes heard during the lesson and corrects them with the Ss
