Description

In this lesson, ss will practice some reading (main task). Before the beginning of the main task, some new vocabulary will be introduced. In the same context, ss will practice some speaking ( Sub Aim).

Materials

Abc Speakout-Intermediate student's book

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about emotions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of emotions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

As my today's topic is talking about the emotions, I decided that my lead-in will talk about the emotions that can be expressed by watching some sports activities, in particulary football game. I will ask the ss what kind of emotions they can express while watching the game etc.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Before the reading, I will first pre-teach some new vocabulary for a better understanding of the text. After this stage, I will explain the next task (reading) by giving clear instructions.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

In this stage, ss will focus on a receptive skill which is reading. The while-reading activity is consisting of three activities. In the first activity, the ss are reading the text which is talking about the emotions, they will try to understand the gist. The reading will be done alone and a time limit will be set up (max. 5 min.). After they achieve the first task, ss will now work in pairs in order to guess which kind of emotions are shown on the pictures. The answers will be checked between different pairs. (O/C, F/B). Ss will also try to explain why people are expressing some particular emotions and when. In the next stage, they will still work in pairs, try to match and recognize the explained emotions from the text, with the proposed pictures above. The answers will be checked between pairs (O/C, F/B).

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

After the reading activity, ss will try to apply what they learned by practicing some speaking activity. They will do this exercise in pairs. A time limit will be set up (5 min). Each ss will tell to his/her partner when was the last time that they felt some kind of emotion. They will tell to each-other, about an emotional situation frome their lives. After that, ss will now try to remember and to describe their partner's story to the class.
