Main Aims

  • To get the sts read for gist and specific information

Subsidiary Aims

  • To teach the students the grammar for plurals

Procedure

Stage 1: Lead-in and Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To give the sts the context for the lesson and elicit the necessary vocabulary

Teacher begins the class by using realia to give the context of technology. T shows his mobile, his laptop and his music player and elicits the words. After this, T asks the students: ''What do you use your mobile for?'' and makes students discuss in pairs. Then the teacher elicits the necessary vocabulary from the students by using pictures and some example sentences with gaps. The words that are going to be elicited are: inventor, company, headphones, memory, government, space shuttle, director, in public.

Stage 2: Reading for Gist (8-10 minutes) • To get the students to read for gist and specific information

The teacher explains the hand out by chesting. Then, the sts read the text on pg34 in order to answer the questions on section 3. The sts will read individually, but they'll answer the questions in pairs. Afterwards, T makes sts check each other's answers to see if they got them correctly. If necessary, the teacher will then nominate the sts one by one to get the correct answers.

Stage 3: Grammar (8-10 minutes) • To teach the students the grammar for plurals.

This stage will follow the Test-Teach-Test method. The students first will highlight the plural words in the text in pairs. Then, the teacher will ask them which words they highlighted. Teacher will correct if they mistakenly highlighted some words in present simple tense, and explain the different kinds of pluralisations. Then, teacher will hand out the pg135 of the CB and ask the students to complete the plural exercise. Teacher will check the answers in the end by making them come to the board.

Stage 4: Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To get the sts to discuss the differences in technology between 1970s and now.

T will ask the sts the questions on pg35, section 4. In order to make the sts understand, T will need to give them some examples. Afterwards, the students will discuss the questions in pairs. The aim is to get the students to use their vocabulary by speaking. After the sts discuss, T will ask them these questions individually by nominating them.

Stage 5: Revision (7-8 minutes) • To revise the vocabulary and grammar that the sts learned during the class

T asks the students questions about the vocabulary, in order to revise information and make sure they remember them. The teacher will write each word on the right side of the board after he elicits them from the students. This part might include some drilling as well. Afterwards, T will check the students' knowledge of grammar for plurals for the last time.
