Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Second Conditional in the context of Imaginary abilities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Imaginary abilities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I start the class by talking about my imaginary thoughts about my personal life.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

In this stage, I will ask my students a question regarding an imaginary job in order to engage them in the class and help them express their ideas.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will write some of my students' sentences in the correct second conditional form on the board to draw their attention to the TL.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will use my students' sentences to explain what the if and result clauses are. Then, I will teach them when and where we are allowed to talk about this structure. Afterward, I am going to teach them how to make negative, positive and question sentences with second conditional. Plus, I will explain how we can exchange the if and result clauses in a sentence as well as talk about other modal verbs that we can use in the result clause. Finally, I will work on the contractions in this structure. ('d = would + wouldn't = would not). The meaning will be clarified by asking CCQs like: Is this a real or an unreal situation? (unreal). What verb tense do we use after "if"? (Past simple). Are we talking about now or the past? (Now/future, but not real)

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will ask my students to go to page 143. Do exercise 9A in 4 minutes individually. They wiil have 2 minutes to check their answers in pairs and then answers will be checked with the whole class.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students are going to be divided into groups of 3. They will be asked to talk about their imaginary superpowers in 10 minutes. They are going to be monitored and feedback will be given at the end if needed.
