Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Present Continuous in the context of having students practice the verb tense by looking at the picture, filling in the blanks, speaking out loud and sharing with the class.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a Coversation in the context of instructing students to come up with sentences using present continuous and sharing them with the class.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I start the class by providing a picture handout with fill in the blanks sentences where present continuous tense is supposed to go. I, then, instruct them to read the sentences and fill in the blanks. After they are done doing so, they will read it out loud to the class.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

In this stage, I ask the students to read to me what they have written down.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will then write some of the sentences in the present continuous on the white board to draw their attention to the TL.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will elicit structure by asking students where to put each word and form a sentence. The meaning will be clarified by asking CCQs such as is the sentence about the present continuous, or the future arrangement? It is about the present continuous. Is the action completed or continuous? It is continuous.Show students a picture of an action taking place in the present continuous for the visual learners.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students are going to divide into pairs. They will be given a handout with a list of present continuous and future arrangement verbs and instructed to form sentences. Then they are told to share their sentences with the class. They are going to to be monitored and feedback will be given at the end if needed.
