In this lesson, Ss learn how to use functions of suggestion forms by listening to a conversation related to the context at the beginning. Secondly, a fill in the gaps exercise takes place by which guided discovery is used. Drilling the sentences and


Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for suggestion forms in the context of birthday presents.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide listening and speaking practice in the context of suggestions.


Stage 1 (Lead In) (2-4 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and set the context of the lesson interesting for the SS

T shows a pic then elicits the 'Birthday Cake'. T asks what do Ss know related to B.Cake to elicit the words 'present' and 'suggestion'. Then links the lead in with Ex 9a- characters and listening practice. T-WC, PW SS, PW SG SS SS, PW T-WC, SS-SS

Stage 2 (Listening for gist) (8-10 minutes) • To get Ss familiar with the TL by a dialog

T plays the dialog and then asks Ss what Tanya and Simon are talking about and what they decide to buy in the end. T points out the use of FL (shall, let's, what about) in the dialog.

Stage 3 (Listening with a fill in the gaps practice) (10-12 minutes) • To introduce Ss to the use of TL

T plays the record again and gets Ss to complete the fill in the gaps exercise. T pairs Ss to perform the dialog by themselves for FB. WCFB takes the stage.

Stage 4 (functional language structure) (10-12 minutes) • To teach Ss the structure of TL for making and asking for 'Suggestions'

T elicits the 3 structural phrases. T gets Ss having dialogs in pairs. T passes out the answer keys.

Stage 5 (Drilling) (6-8 minutes) • Stress drilling

T drills the TL phrases by having a WCFB.
