Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Past Simple in the context of Holiday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Holiday

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I start the class by talking about the way I spent the last weekend and the interesting things that I did then.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

In this stage I will ask my students to tell me about the things they did during the last weekend and if anything interesting has happened to them.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will write some of my students sentences in the correct past simple form on the board to draw their attention to the TL.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will elicit the structure by asking the students where I can put each word. We will cover the regular and irregular verbs by pointing out the verbs than can have ed at the end and the ones that change. The pronunciation of the verbs when they are added ed will be covered as well. (played /d/ - asked /t/ - created /Id/) or some special verbs like "said". The meaning will be clarified by drawing a timeline on the board and asking CCQs like: Is the sentence about the past, present or future? (past). Is the action completed in the past? (yes). Can I mention the time at the end? (yes).

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will ask my students to go to page 120. Do exercise 1A in 4 minutes individually. They will have 2 minuets to check their answers in pairs and then answers will be checked with the whole class.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students are going to be divided into groups of 4. They will be asked to talk about their best holiday ever in 10 minutes. They are going to be monitored and feedback will be given at the end if needed.
