Upper Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, Ss will be tested on their knowledge of the meaning, form and pronunciation of Causatives. There will be a clarification stage which will be shaped according to their level of knowledge and another test will follow the clarification. In the end of the lesson they will get to practice the language in speech and will be provided with some error correction.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of Causatives in the context of celebrities / Paris Hilton.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of celebrities.

Procedure

Test #1 (4-6 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

* Chest the HO. * "Circle the correct answers." "Put the words in correct order to form a sentence." * "Work alone!" * Give them 2-3 minutes. * Monitor to see their answers. * When they are finished get them to peer check. * Give out the answer key.

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

* Project pictures of Paris Hilton on WB. * "Do you think she cuts her own hair?" -"Does she buy her own clothes?" - "Does she walk her dog herself?" "Does she clean her house?" * Elicit the TL. * Ask if this is fair, to link the context with the previous lesson.

Teach (3-7 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

1. If most of the Ss got the answers correct: * Use the model sentences from the controlled practice for both passive and active form of TL and elicit the form from the Ss. * Write this form on the WB. * Do pronunciation drills!!! - Highlight the place of the stress in the sentence (on the verbs) * Ask Ss if we can use contractions such as 'I'd my butler answer...' * Tell them that we can't and highlight the stress on 'had'. 2. If most of the Ss couldn't get the correct answers: * Clarify the meaning with CCQs. -Does she cut her own hair? -No. - Does someone else cut her hair? -Yes - Do they do this because she asked them to? -Yes * Clarify the passive and active form of TL by writing model sentences on WB. * Try to elicit the structure from Ss. * Do pronunciation drills!!! - Highlight the place of the stress in the sentence (on the verbs) * Ask Ss if we can use contractions such as 'I'd my butler answer...' * Tell them that we can't and highlight the stress on 'had'. 3. If Ss got the meaning and the form for passive form correct, but they got the wrong answers for active form: * Clarify the active form and write on the WB: 'have sb do sth / get sb to do sth' * Do pronunciation drills!!! - Highlight the place of the stress in the sentence (on the verbs) * Ask Ss if we can use contractions such as 'I'd my butler answer...' * Tell them that we can't and highlight the stress on 'had'.

Test #2 (8-17 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Test #2 Stage for options #2 * Instruct Ss to think of the 2 exercises as one. * Tell them not to unfold the paper. - "Fill the gaps with the correct form of the verbs and fill the gaps with have or get." ICQ: - Are we unfolding the paper? -No - Are we doing just one of the exercises? -No * Tell them to do it individually. - "Work alone!" * Give them 2-3 minutes. * Monitor for the answers. * Get them to peer check when they finish. - "Check your answers with your partners." * Project the exercise on the WB and write the correct answers on it. * Clarify any common mistakes. * Instruct Ss to turn the paper around. - "Write 4 sentences using 'have' and 'get' ..." - "Work alone!" * Give them 3 minutes. * Monitor for the answers and the usage of TL. * When they finish, get them to check and discuss their answers, with the person on their other side this time! - "Check your answers with your partners." * Elicit some of the answers and make error correction in case of any errors. Test #2 Stage for Option #3: * Skip the first exercise about the passive form and instruct Ss to do the 2nd exercise. - "Fill the gaps with 'have' or 'get' * Tell them not to unfold the paper. ICQ: "Are we doing both of the exercises?" -No * Tell them to do it individually. - "Work alone!" * Give them 2 minutes. * Monitor for the answers. * Get them to peer check when they finish. - "Check your answers with your partners." * Project the exercise on the WB and write the correct answers on it. * Clarify any common mistakes. * Instruct Ss to turn the paper around. - "Write 4 sentences using 'have' and 'get' ..." - "Work alone!" * Give them 3 minutes. * Monitor for the answers and the usage of TL. * When they finish, get them to check and discuss their answers, with the person on their other side this time! - "Check your answers with your partners." * Elicit some of the answers and make error correction in case of any errors. Test #2 Stage for Option #1: * Skip the controlled practice exercises. * Instruct Ss to "Write 5 sentences using 'have' and 'get' to tell about what you would have people do if you were Paris Hilton?" - "Work alone!" * Give them 3 minutes. * Monitor for the answers and the usage of TL. * When they finish, get them to check and discuss their answers, with person on their other side this time! - "Check your answers with your partners" * Elicit some of the answers and make error correction in case of any errors.

Free practice (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

* Group Ss in groups of 3. * Tell them they are all celebrities and they are very rich. * They need to introduce themselves to their friends and tell each other about the stuff that they would ask their butlers, servants, people around them to do for them. * If there is extra time, tell them they have to decide on 3 of these things and ask them to persuade each other to go with what they want. * Monitor for the use of TL and for errors. * Correct the errors on the WB.
