AI assissted writing Compare & Contrast
pre-advanced level
Materials
Main Aims
-
To enable students to successfully brainstorm similarities and differences between two topics using AI support and to write a well-structured introduction paragraph for a compare and contrast essay, focusing on hook, background, and thesis sentence construction.
Subsidiary Aims
-
The lesson was effective in helping students overcome previous difficulties with idea generation. By scaffolding the brainstorming process with AI and structured prompts, learners produced richer, more organized content. The exposure to templates and sentence patterns improved their confidence in structuring an introduction. Peer feedback and underlining the thesis sentence helped consolidate understanding. Some students still relied too heavily on AI phrasing, so future lessons will include a focus on paraphrasing and personalization.
Procedure (45-59 minutes)
T will Project two images or write a topic on the board: e.g. Fast food vs. Home-cooked food Say With your partner, write down one similarity and one difference between these two. You have two minutes.” SS will Work in pairs and quickly list 1 similarity + 1 difference T elicits 2–3 answers from the class
Ask students to open ChatGPT and enter: “Give me a model introduction paragraph for a compare and contrast essay about fast food and home-cooked meals. Label the hook, background, and thesis.” Say: “Now, highlight or underline the hook, the background sentence, and the thesis.” Then say: “With your partner, discuss: Which sentence grabs attention? Which one introduces the topic? Which one gives the thesis?” Follow up by eliciting answers and writing the 3 parts on the board for reference. SS will Generate the paragraph, annotate the three parts, and discuss answers with their partner Then share observations during class feedback
T will Display topic options on the board: Online vs. face-to-face learning City vs. village life Travelling alone vs. travelling in a group Instagram vs. TikTok Say: “Choose one topic and open ChatGPT. Type this: ‘Give me 4 similarities and 4 differences between [Topic A] and [Topic B].’ Then say: “Copy the ideas into a Google Doc titled ‘Brainstorm – [Your Topic]’. Highlight 3 good ones and add 1 original idea of your own.” SS will Choose a topic in pairs or individually, use ChatGPT to brainstorm, and personalize the list Highlight and edit their brainstorm
T will Say: “Now you’re going to build your introduction paragraph step by step using AI.” Give students these prompts one at a time: “Give me 5 hook sentence templates for compare and contrast essays.” “Give me 5 background sentence templates for compare and contrast essays.” “Give me 5 thesis statement templates for compare and contrast essays.” Say: “Pick one from each category and use your brainstormed ideas to write a 3–4 sentence introduction paragraph. Don’t copy – adapt.” SS will Ask the three prompts, choose templates, and build their full introduction paragraph using their brainstormed ideas
T will Say: “Now swap your introduction paragraph with a partner.” Write this checklist on the board: Is there a hook or background sentence? Are both topics clearly introduced? Is the thesis clear and does it show comparison and contrast? Say: “Use the checklist to give one piece of feedback. Then underline your own thesis sentence.” Finally, ask for 2–3 volunteers to read their full paragraph aloud to the class. SS will Swap and read each other’s paragraphs Give peer feedback using the checklist Underline the thesis in their own paragraph 1–2 pairs will share with the class
Project 2 example sentences (from student work or AI) on the board: “Although city and village life share some features, they differ in pace and environment.” “This essay will explore how online and face-to-face classes compare in flexibility and interaction.” Say: “What kind of linking words do you see? What’s the structure of these thesis statements?” Ask: “What makes them academic?” Write useful sentence frames on the board. Optional: do a choral repetition of one structure. SS will Analyze sentence structure and language features in pairs or as a class Repeat useful forms out loud
Give a new topic (e.g. Books vs Movies). Say: “Now you’ll write a full new introduction paragraph. You can use AI to brainstorm if needed. Write a hook, background sentence, and thesis based on your new topic.” Optional prompt if needed: “Can you help me write an introduction paragraph for a compare and contrast essay about books and movies?” Say: “Underline your thesis sentence. When you finish, you may ask ChatGPT for feedback using: ‘Can you give feedback on my compare and contrast introduction paragraph?’” SS will Work individually to brainstorm (if needed) and write a full new paragraph Underline the thesis and review it with or without AI
