In this lesson ss will learn to practice the functional language through some speaking and listening exercices.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of language used for business in the context of set up a company

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about Functional language in the context of set up a company
  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of set up a company


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Out today's topic is talking about how to set up a company. I will make a litle introduction by asking ss which kind of company they would found and why. Some of them have already done some business, I will also ask those students about their opinions, for ex. was it hard to start a business, is it profitable, worthy etc. I will involve everybody in this little discussion in order to introduce them for our new lesson.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will pre-teach some new vocabulary before the listening. This time I will not use any projector and I will try to do the ECDW stage by drawing pictures on the board. I will try to elicit the words from the students by giving clear explanations and examples.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The ss will have a listening for gist task which is focused on learning of functional language in context of how to set up a company. The listening will be repeated several time in order to be able to complete some of the next exercices.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

After the listening tasks, ss will do some exercices by trying to remember what they heard. The mentioned exercices consists of underlining and ticking options. One of the particular tasks will be to think about a F/B technique. As a technique, I was thinking about a peer check in the first time, and than, checking between different pairs. After those exercices, ss will switch to the next exercice, by trying to add the phrases from the previous exercice. This exercice will help them to fulfill the main aim, which is the functional language. In the context of using a functional language, they will also rewrite some sentences by giving the same meaning as the previous ones. In the same context, they will also be asked to put the words in order to make a sentence, a particular attention will be focused on drilling and to the stress in some words. The last stage of my lesson is focused on a group speaking work, where the ss will have to explain how to set up a company by using and following the given options. In the last stage, I will closely do my monitoring.
