Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of adjectives used for extreme conditions in the context of ext

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will play a 1 min. video on WB about Cherrapunji (India) which is the wettest and most rainy city on earth. After the video, T will tell about the city, ask "How would it be to live in such a place?" and elicit some ideas.

Pre-Listening (2-3 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T will show the pictures of the four people from different countries on WB (PPT) and elicit some ideas from the Ss. Then, T will show the gist reading question on WB (PPT) and ask Ss to guess which might be which before listening to the record.

While-Listening #1 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist listening task in the context of extreme places

T will hand out a folded paper in which the gist reading question is written and play the record. Ss will check their answers in pairs. T will elicit them and ask "Why do you think so?"

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed listening task in the context of extreme places.

T will ask Ss to unfold the paper she has handed out for gist listening and tell them read the more detailed questions about the people from different extreme places quickly. Then T will play the record for Ss once. While they are listening to the record, T will monitor them and see whether it is necessary to play it one more time or not. If necessary, the record will be played twice in total for detailed listening. Ss will answer the questions and then check them in pairs. T will elicit the answers from Ss and ask "How did you find the answer?" for each question. After the exercise is done, T will tell them they can find the transcription at the back of the paper.

Vocabulary Post-Teaching (11-12 minutes) • To provide students with post-vocabulary exercise to them understand the adjective used for extreme conditions and prepare them for the freer activity

T will hand out a paper with a matching/replacing vocabulary activity. Ss will check their answers in pairs and T will show pictures on WB related to the adjectives in the vocabulary exercise and write the words under these pictures to create the image of the word in Ss' minds. T will say "All of the words/phrases are adjectives" and drill pronunciation.

Post-Listening: Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T will hang the pictures of four cities from Turkey on the wall: 1: the coldest city in Turkey 2. The hottest city in Turkey 3. The most crowded city in Turkey 4. The wettest city in Turkey. There will be key points for each picture. T will divide the class into four groups (1-2-3-4). Then Ss will stand up, find their numbers on the wall and talk about this city: "What would they say to a foreigner about that city (the life in the city)?". Ss will discuss the points and then if there is still time, they will go and ask their friends what their city is and what they are discussing.
