Main Aims

  • To provide gist in the context of listening practice using a text about age and job of family members

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency in the context of speaking practice in a conversation in the context of a brief introduction of family members

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will be asked to talk about their family members. What people are in their family? How old are they? What do they do?

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students will be informed about the meaning of the following words and phrases in the context of the text, then asked to make questions with them in pairs and answer them. Then, they will be asked to read the question for practice A, so they will know what information they have to listen for in the audio. How old is he? / What does he do? / He is .... Years old / He's a .... / He studies ..../ Lawyer / University

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I play the audio file for the first time, and let the students write down their answers. Then, I will play it for a second time. After that, the students will check their answers through pair work. If students have different answers from each other, ask for their reasoning and allow the pair to work through the answers. Once everyone reach the correct answers, I play the audio again for practice B. Practice B requires more focus than A, and have listened to it three times, it makes it easier for the students to each the answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

We will follow the same procedure for question B, as we did for A. Once all the students have correct answers, we will move to question C.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will work in pairs to complete practice C, where they each write down the name of three people on a piece of paper with brief information. The other student will ask the questions mentioned in the lesson, and will receive answers in the same manner.
